KARYSTOS (Karistos)

A quaint fishing port of about 5,000 residents at the southern end of the island of Evia which remains unaffected by commercial tourism. There are hotels and tourist facilities available which are enjoyed predominantly by Greeks during the summer season.

Mount Ochi (1390m), with its Dragon Houses on the top, dominates the area and Karystos is overlooked by the ruins of the Red Castle (1030 AD). Besides the beautiful beaches and scenery there are a number of monasteries, the reconstructed Venetian fortress of Bourtzi, and the columns at Kallindri to explore.

Facilities:
The town is the regional centre and provides retail facilities including tavernas and cafes by the harbour. There is a historic keep and it is a suitable port of call for sailors exploring the region.

How to get there:
There is a ferry link at Marmari to Rafina which is about 20 minutes from Athens Airport. There is also road access via a scenic route from Halkida about 130 km to the north-west.
